The even increasing energy demand in the world is a relevant problem for the modern society. The energy supply from fossil fuels has become a critical aspect due to the progressive reduction of reserves and political instability among the Countries. For these reasons, the exploitation of renewable energy sources is looked with a great interest. In this context, solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, and biomass can be successfully used through commercial technologies. Modern excavations of settlement sites from the end of the First Iron Age and the beginning of the second, together with a re-examination of those undertaken in the past, permit us to better approach some material that has traditionally been neglected as a result of its unpromising aspect: notably some of the iron material. This article will attempt to show the diversity of this material, and some new methods permitting its quantification. The aim is to deepen our understanding of the role and status of this metal in Hallstatt society by a consideration of the material from occupation sites as opposed to funerary monuments.
